Our Sustainability
journey at yak brewing
company

At Yak Brewing Company, we prioritise sustainability without compromising on the quality of our beer. We understand the importance of minimising our environmental impact and are dedicated to taking action. Here’s what sustainability means to us in practice:

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

We recognise the potential impact of our brewery on the environment. That’s why we’re committed to implementing measures that reduce our carbon footprint, conserve resources, and protect ecosystems.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

We’re constantly seeking innovative solutions to promote sustainability throughout our operations. From sourcing eco-friendly ingredients to implementing energy-efficient practices, we’re dedicated to finding new ways to minimise our environmental footprint.

POSITIVE IMPACT

Our goal extends beyond our brewery. We aim to make a positive impact on the environment and inspire others to join us on this journey towards a more sustainable future. By leading by example, we hope to encourage individuals and businesses alike to embrace sustainable practices.

By prioritising sustainability, we believe we can create a better world while still delivering exceptional beer. Join us in our commitment to a more sustainable future. Together, we can make a difference.

SOLAR POWERING OUR BREWERY

To reduce our environmental impact, we’ve transitioned to solar power as our primary energy source for brewing Barahsinghe beers. Solar energy is clean, renewable, and helps us minimise our reliance on non-renewable resources.

In 2023, we installed 910 solar panels on the rooftop of our brewery. These panels generate an impressive 600 kW of clean energy each day, providing us with a sustainable energy solution.

Our solar power system efficiently meets the energy demands of our brewhouse during daytime hours. We’re proud to say that 100% of our brewhouse’s total energy consumption during the day is powered by solar energy.

By harnessing solar energy, we eliminate the need for fossil fuel consumption, reducing our carbon footprint. Annually, we save over 800 tonnes of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere, contributing to a cleaner and greener planet.

By embracing solar power, we’re making a positive impact on the environment while continuing to produce exceptional beers.

WATER CONSERVATION:

PRESERVING OUR PRECIOUS RESOURCE

We understand the importance of water conservation and our responsibility to protect this valuable resource. Here’s how we prioritise water conservation in our operations:

1. Bore Water Treatment

The bore water we use for brewing undergoes treatment at our Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant. This process separates the water into treated water and rejected water. The rejected water is then converted into soft water, which we utilize in our boiler house to generate thermal energy.

2. Condensation Collection

We collect and reuse the water condensed from our boiler’s steam line. This practice minimizes any loss of water resources, ensuring we make the most efficient use of this precious commodity.

Thanks to these water conservation practices, we save millions of gallons of water annually, making a significant positive impact on our environment and community.

ENERGY EFFICIENT BREWING:

REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Energy consumption in the brewing industry has environmental effects, and we are committed to reducing our impact by optimising energy efficiency in every stage of the brewing process.

1. Krones Energy Recycling System (ERS)

Our brewery utilises the Krones ERS technology to capture and reuse the heat generated during brewing. This recovered heat is used to preheat incoming water and cool the wort, resulting in substantial energy savings and a lower carbon footprint.

2. Vapour Absorption Machine (VAM)

Equipped in our brewhouse, the VAM uses steam from a boiler as the heat source to cool the beer during fermentation. This results in higher efficiency and lower energy consumption. Additionally, the VAM utilises environmentally friendly natural refrigerant ammonia.

By implementing these energy recovery systems, we save over 30% of primary energy, equivalent to approximately 300,000 kWh of thermal energy annually. Additionally, our VAM saves 115 kWh of electricity per hour, equivalent to running a typical household refrigerator for 192 days.

WASTE MANAGEMENT:

COMMITTED TO A CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Waste management is a critical aspect of our brewing process. Here’s how we minimise waste and promote a circular economy:

1. Solid Waste Reduction

We incorporate circular economy methodologies to repurpose, reuse, and recycle solid waste. Switching to a reusable smart membrane filter for beer filtration reduces our solid waste stream by 50%. We supply brewing ingredients and products in bulk to avoid packaging waste, and 95% of used beer bottles are collected and reused in our brewery. Additionally, spent grain is repurposed as animal feed, and we recycle all excess waste materials, including cardboard, glass, and metals.

2. CO2 Recovery System

Our brewery features a wastewater treatment plant with an anaerobic digester. This facility breaks down organic matter from wastewater, producing clean water and biogas as by-products. We treat millions of gallons of process water each year, safely discharging it into nearby water sources. The resulting methane gas is collected and reused as fuel for our boiler house, providing 15% of our brewhouse’s energy usage.

3. Wastewater Treatment

We have installed a carbon dioxide recovery system that captures CO2 produced during fermentation. This captured CO2 is purified, compressed, and reused for carbonating beer during the bottling process, minimizing our carbon footprint.

Our carbon dioxide recovery system offsets tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, contributing to a more sustainable brewing process.

SUSTAINABLE BREWING:

A JOURNEY TOWARDS CARBON NEUTRALITY

Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond individual initiatives. We continuously explore innovative solutions and work towards building sustainable brewing practices. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, and together, we can shape a sustainable brewing industry that leads by example. By prioritising sustainability, we pave the way for a future where the harmony between nature and brewing thrives. Join us as we embark on this transformative path to build a better world for all.
